Gearbox Analysis

Why an Epicyclic Gear Train?

Black and Decker likely chose an epicyclic gear train because it provides the most output torque in the most compact form factor. This allows the screwdriver to have more power in a smaller form factor, reducing size and weight, and increasing mobility for consumers.

Also, because of the nature of epicyclic gear systems, loads experienced by the screwdriver are distributed over multiple gears, meaning the tool will last longer.

Gearbox Calculations

Below are calculations related to the gearbox contained in the B+D Li2000.

Torque (τ) and RPM(ω) Calculations

A quick search of the specs found on the B+D Li2000 yields both output torque and output RPM.

We can calculate the input torque and RPM from the motor using the Gear Ratio of 81:1.
